Our Le Ranch campsite is in La Plaine-sur-Mer on the Jade Coast in the Loire-Atlantique. It is a town teeming with charm, renowned for its landscapes, beaches and shore fishing.
Between coast and countryside, La Plaine-sur-Mer is famous for its 6 beaches that it proudly symbolises with 6 fish on its coat of arms. Until 1908, the municipality was known simply as “La Plaine” and also encompassed the village of Préfailles.
As well as lazing on the beach or enjoying the watersports on offer, you can try the 3 hiking trails and follow more than 20 km of waymarked cycle paths. If you can’t bring your own bike, you can hire one at the campsite for the day or for the week.
The centre of the village is also worth a visit. The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption houses some splendid stained-glass windows and a lovely baptismal font. If you are looking for some greenery, head to the Jardin des Lakas. It has a children’s playground and picnic tables.
Do you know the French word for shellfish farming? Conchyliculture… quite a tongue-twister! The area’s speciality? The famous Bouchot mussels, which go under the name “La Plainais” and can be cooked in a variety of ways.
As well as the fisheries (symbolised by the fishing huts on stilts), you’ll come across features of maritime history such as the old Anchor, paying tribute to the sailors who disappeared during the War of the Cardinals in 1750, and the big Euler buoy.
Finally, discover the local products made from Retz Spirulina, an algae with numerous virtues that you can add to certain recipes. Sounds unusual? Well, why not give it a try?
