Nantes has a large student community and is a very dynamic destination just waiting to be explored. It also boasts the “Towns and Regions of Art and History” label. So, what can you see and do in the capital of the Loire-Atlantique?
Nantes has retained some impressive historical and architectural heritage. Located south of the Armorican Massif, “the city of the dukes” is home to the magnificent Castle of the Dukes of Brittany surrounded by water and beautiful half-timbered houses from the 15th century. On foot, on a bicycle, on a Segway or by tram, a tour of the city is sure to amaze you.
The Île de Nantes, located in the middle of the Loire and Erdre rivers, is a perfect example. On the one hand, you have the famed and fabulous Machines de l’Île with its museum you simply must see. You can even ride on the back of a giant mechanical elephant made from wood! On the other hand, you have the Île de Versailles, a Zen, Japanese-style garden where you can enjoy some respite from the buzz of the city centre. Not to mention the many art exhibitions it hosts all year round.
The Île de Versailles is not the only garden where you can enjoy some fresh air in Nantes. The city is surrounded by water and has more than 100 public parks and gardens. It is also keen to promote renewable energy, public transport and cycle access.
In short, Nantes is a great place to live. And it’s worth taking a trip there during your camping holiday.
